The construction of models and solutions for financial, business, and societal problems involving uncertain future events.

Applied Math

The attempt to use mathematics to quantify and solve problems which arise in investigation of the physical world and human enterprise. It is also the study and further development of those areas of mathematics that have proven the most useful in solving real world problems or seem to offer promise for present problems.

General Math

The emphasis of the Program is on the breadth of mathematical knowledge. Courses offered for General Mathematics include, with a few isolated exceptions, all courses labeled Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.

Statistics

Statistics (STAT) is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical facts. Understanding statistical reasoning and the application of Statistics to real-world situations are the focus of the program. Statistics Website

Combined Programs

Several double major and major/minor combinations are available. It is also possible to combine the requirements of any two programs offered by the University.

Student Opportunities

Mathematics in Budapest with Art History

A group of students from the University of Calgary travels to Budapest, Hungary from late May to end of June , as part of a Credit Travel Study Program, led by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Two courses in mathematics and one in art history are offered. More details about the program can be found in our 2006 and 2005 reports.

Math in Budapest

A Group Study Program, which offers students alternate study environments, international experiences and exposure to diverse cultures while earning credit .
