Abstract: Essential spectrum and the numerical range

Following a conjecture of Hubner, we show for a bounded linear operator A
on a complex Hilbert space that the boundary points of the numerical 
range W(A) with infinite curvature and unique tangent are in the 
essential spectrum of A.
