The emphasis of the General Mathematics Program is on the breadth of mathematical knowledge.

Courses offered for the General Mathematics Program include, with a few isolated exceptions, all courses labeled Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.

Specifically, students in the General Mathematics program have increased flexibility in selecting courses to meet their program requirements. This makes it highly attractive for students who wish to pursue another academic field of study to complement General Mathematics.

Students in all areas of the natural sciences will find mathematics essential, and they are required to take a certain number of mathematics courses for their programs. They are encouraged to seriously consider pursuing a major in General Mathematics (or a major or minor in one of the other mathematics programs) alongside their own science major. A deepened understanding of mathematics will be advantageous to all students of the natural sciences.

Students in some areas of Arts will find mathematics useful, too, as applications of mathematics and statistics are commonplace in many areas of the social sciences, such as Economics, Sociology, and Psychology. Students in the Fine Arts may find mathematics enlightening too, as they are able to appreciate the beauty of the world and artistic creations through the lens of mathematics.

Finally, a special Combined program of General Mathematics and Education is also available.

For details concerning the General Mathematics program, Double-Major programs within the Faculty of Science, and five-year Combined Programs with Arts and with Education, consult relevant sections of the University of Calgary Calendar.
