The construction of models and solutions for financial, business, and societal problems involving uncertain future events.

The attempt to use mathematics to quantify and solve problems which arise in investigation of the physical world and human enterprise. It is also the study and further development of those areas of mathematics that have proven the most useful in solving real world problems or seem to offer promise for present problems.

The emphasis of the Program is on the breadth of mathematical knowledge. Courses offered for General Mathematics include, with a few isolated exceptions, all courses labeled Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers minor programs in the fields of Actuarial Science (ACSC); Applied Mathematics (AMAT); Pure Mathematics (PMAT) ; and Statistics (STAT).

The creation, development, and exploration of the form and knowledge of Mathematics itself, with elegance, aesthetic balance, and connections with other areas of Mathematics as the sought after, delineating features.

Statistics (STAT) is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical facts. Understanding statistical reasoning and the application of Statistics to real-world situations are the focus of the program. STAT courses are listed in the University calendar.

Several double major and major/minor combinations are available. It is also possible to combine the requirements of any two programs offered by the University.
