In this talk, we are concerned with the transcendence, or in other words the nonalgebraic nature, of pi. We begin by giving some definitions. We then draw attention to the overwhelming preponderance of transcendental numbers over algebraic numbers. Next, we give Lindemann's proof (1882) of the transcendence of pi. We finish with recent developments in transcendence theory.
