In 1991, Alexandre Grothendieck withdrew from society.  At this point in his life, he was refusing to see visitors and had sparse interaction with the mathematical community.  This mathematician will probably be
remembered as much for his enormous contributions to our understanding of algebraic geometry as for eccentricity.

This talk will present an account of his life and will comment on some of his more accessible mathematics.
