In the terminology of statistical mechanics, a "lattice animal" is just a finite connected subgraph of a regular periodic lattice. The simple cubic lattice is of particular interest, since three-dimensional lattice animals serve as models of branched polymer molecules.

My talk will focus on the asymptotics of the number of lattice animals with N vertices, as N tends to infinity. The significance of certain "critical exponents" will be highlighted. I shall also show how a geometric inequality of Loomis and Whitney is used in the proofs in two very different ways.
