The classical four vertex theorem states that any simple closed curve in the plane has at least four local extrema of curvature. In this talk we discuss analogues of this result for surfaces with boundary and compete Riemannian surfaces. In particular we show how the four vertex property of curves may be used to characterize disks, spheres, and simply connected space forms.
