We report on the work on endoscopic classification for quasi-split unitary groups. We will highlight some local and global results that are corollaries of the theory.

In this talk we will give a non-singular compactification of Hilbert modular surfaces by constructing a particular toric variety for each cusp. Other than the familiar compactification of modular curves this illustrative example is the simplest case of Mumford's theory of toroidal compactifications.
