Master's (MSc) Thesis-based

Minimum 2 terms of full-time study and research at the UofC culminating in a Masters Thesis.

Faculty of Graduate Studies HANDBOOK on Master's Thesis-based Rules and Regulations

This degree must be completed on a full-time basis

There is a minimum residence requirement of 2 four-month terms of full-time study and research at the University of Calgary.

Requirements (in addition to Faculty requirements)

  • An adequate background in Mathematics or Statistics, each applicant's background will be assessed individually
  • Students applying for the MSc program in Statistics should either have a 4 year Bachelors (BSc) in Statistics or a BSc in Mathematics with some undergraduate courses in Probability and Statistics, as to what these courses are, there is no particular requirement, each applicant's background will be considered individually
  • Students applying for the MSc program in Statistics should either have a BSc in Statistics or a BSc in Mathematics with some undergraduate courses in Probability and Statistics, as to what these courses are, there is no particular requirement, each applicant's background will be considered individually
  • Normally, an Honours Bachelor degree, or its equivalent, in the subject of the division for which application is made
  • Minimum GPA 3.00 (on a 4-point system) over the last 2 full years of Bachelor's
  • Performance Level: MUST maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 calculated on a 4-point scale at the end of each registration year and cannot have more than two grades of B- or below.

Completion Time

Minimum expected is 2 years and maximum allowed is 4 years

Course Load

All students take course work to the equivalent of an Honours Bachelor's degree plus at least 5 half-course equivalents or 4 half-course equivalents if completing program in one year (not counting the seminar course) at the graduate level.

Advanced Credit

MUST BE applied for at time of application; graduate level course with B grade or higher within the past 5 years from a recognized institution; not part of another degree; not exceed 1/3 of graduate program.

Required Courses

APPLIED MATHEMATICS must include 2 of AMAT 605, AMAT 617, PMAT 607, PMAT 611 in their program; and, in each of the first two years of their program, the seminar course AMAT 621

PURE MATHEMATICS must include 2 of AMAT 605, AMAT 617, PMAT 607,PMAT 611 in their program; and, in each of the first two years of their program, the seminar course PMAT 621

STATISTICS students must include any 3 of STAT 701, STAT 703, STAT 721, STAT 723; and, in each of the first two years of their program, the seminar course STAT 621

Required Examinations

  • Students MUST write a thesis and pass a thesis oral examination
  • topic should be agreed on by the Student and Supervisor
  • Thesis is completed and an Examining Committee is chosen and Notice of Oral Exam is sent to Faculty of Graduate Studies 4 weeks prior to date of oral exam
  • Examiners must have copy of thesis at least 3 weeks prior to date of oral exam.
