On behalf of the CMS: The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and the University of Alberta invite the mathematical community to the 2011 CMS Summer Meeting in Edmonton, from June 3 to 5). All scientific talks and social events will take place at the University of Alberta. Registration, exhibits and coffee breaks are located in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS).
As you may be aware from an email forwarded by the department, there are 2 special courses being offered in the winter term. These are both pilot projects of the PIMS universities to offer graduate courses for credit though online platforms. We GUMS, along with various other graduate societies and mathematics departments across western Canada endorsed this project in the spring and I for one am excited to see it come to fruition.
On behalf of the CMS Student Committee: As you might know, the next CMS Winter meeting will be held at UBC December 4-6th. All students are encouraged to present a poster with a topic of their choice on Saturday, December 4. The poster can be on your current or previous research, it could simply be a survey of the topic you're planning to start your research in or even just a fun and interesting topic of mathematics. There will be judging and the top three posters will be awarded cash prizes as well as two complimentary banquet tickets each.
This past Friday, October 15th, GUMS and SCUM held their second jointly-funded Wine & Cheese event. The event had a great turn out, with about 50 graduate students, faculty, staff, and undergraduates attending! Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen price increase with our liquor order, we were unable to have wine at the event and, hence, the new name: the W(h)ine & Cheese. However, the money allocated to wine was redistributed to more diverse and tastier food!
On behalf of the Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science, Environmental Design (ENSC, EVDS, Urban Design, Planning) Librarian: As part of the University of Calgary's Open Access Week, the Library is hosting a workshop on Copyright and Intellectual Property. As it affects graduate student research and publication, everyone is encouraged to attend. Wendy Stephens, the University Copyright Officer and Mary Westell, Director of the Centre for Scholarly Communication will discuss the many issues scholars need to know—with lots of time for questions.
On behalf of the Canadian Association of Science Centres:
Now is your chance to gain exposure to bright young science and technology grads, while ensuring the future health of the natural resources sector—all while benefiting from internship funding support. It’s all part of the Canadian Association of Science Centres (CASC) Science Interns Outreach Project and runs until March 2011. The program provides an opportunity to recent graduates in science or engineering to gain meaningful work experience within their field of studies.
The Graduate Students' Association held their Annual General Meeting last Thursday night. The meeting included presentations by Dr. Fred Hall and Robert Clegg, as well as the GSA's audited financial statements and budget.
