Application Requirements

Applying for a Graduate Degree

To apply to any of our graduate degree programs (MSc Thesis-based, MSc Course-based, or PhD), please ensure that you meet the requirements below, and then follow the directions under the heading “How to Apply.”


The items listed below pertain to all degrees to which you apply.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

If your primary language is not English you MUST submit either:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), minimal requirement, 580 written-based, 93 internet based.   Arrange to take TOEFL
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), minimal requirement 7. Arrange to take IELTS
  • MUST have completed and received a grade of  "B" on Level III of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program by the Department deadline for applications.   Arrange to register for EAP

Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirement

  • 3.00 (on a 4 point system) is required
  • To calculate GPA, use last 2 years of Bachelors, all of Masters (do not split up a term)
  • For International Students see Requirements for Admission

Application Materials

You must submit the following to the Department by January 15:

  1. graduate studies on-line application
  2. application fee must be paid
  3. transcripts and degree certificates if degree not shown as awarded on your transcript
  4. three reference forms with reference letters printed on institutional letterhead
  5. English Language Proficiency Test (if applicable)

Application Fee: Mandatory, Non-Refundable


  • $125 CDN for Canadians and Permanent Residents
  • $145 CDN for International Students with a Study Permit
  • $180 CAD for re-admission to complete a program you withdrew from

Methods of Payment: You can pay your application fee in your application by using Visa or Master credit card. There are several ways you can pay your tuition and fees at the University of Calgary.

Applicants With Other Degrees

Students with Undergraduate Degrees outside Mathematics and Statistics
While the graduate selection committee considers each student’s situation independently, the graduate degrees offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics require an extensive background in the subject. Most students obtain this background by completing their BSc (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a Math related discipline.If your undergraduate degree is in a discipline other than mathematics or statistics, please check that you meet all of the prerequisites before applying. To do so:

  • Determine the required courses for the degree (MSc Thesis-based, MSc Course-based, or PhD) from the information above
